Romans 7: When Sin Uses the Law

Aug 31, 2025    Steve Wayne

This sermon walks through Romans 7:7–13 to show that God’s law is holy and good, but our sinful hearts twist it, so that the very command not to covet awakens coveting in us. Paul reflects on his own pre-Christian life to expose how sin seizes the law as an opportunity to deceive and kill, proving that no one can achieve righteousness by rule-keeping. Only the new way of the Spirit, given through union with Christ, can produce true fruit and free us from both legalism and careless “anything goes” grace. The message lands with pastoral comfort: God loved us while we were still sinners, we cannot earn his favor, and we are called to cultivate a life in the Spirit through the Word, prayer, the church, and ongoing repentance.
